MIA Breaks 8.2 Million Passenger in 2018

Macau International Airport (MIA) registered strong performance last year to achieve new records for passenger traffic in 2018.  During the year, MIA welcomed 8.26 million arriving and departing passengers and handled over 65,000 aircraft movements, representing an increase of 15% and 12% respectively.  It is the highest passenger traffic MIA has accomplished over 12 times of the local population. There are 27 airlines operate at MIA connecting Macau to some 51 destinations covering area in Mainland China, China Taiwan, Southeast Asia and Northeast Asia attracted more local and international travelers. Among them, the passenger traffic from routes of Mainland China, Southeast Asia and Northeast Asia have accounted for 37% and 41% of the total passenger volume of the airport.

MIA achieves a new passenger traffic volume record in 2018, the successful achievement came from the joint efforts and close cooperation among each of our business partners to cooperate with Macao SAR Government policy to integrate into the development of Guangdong, Hong Kong, Macao Greater Bay Area and to build up Macau into a World Center of Tourism and Leisure. And through making full use of the advantages of the opening of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, MIA recorded steady growth in 2018. In 2018, MIA expanded our air network by adding 10 new international routes, including Sanya of China, Qingdao of China, Xian of China, Kunming of China, Phuket of Thailand, Kota Kinabalu of Malaysia, Tuguegarao of Philippines, Krabi of Thailand, Taegu of South Korea and Cebu of Philippines.  It helps to further expand the air network at MIA. 

MIA always encourages airlines to increase frequencies in the potential market, especially on long haul routes. MIA once again used the 5th freedom right to develop mid-long haul destinations such as charter flight service to Russia. MIA also successfully attracted 6 new Airlines flying to Macau namely Small Planet Airlines, Royal Air Charter Service, Cambodia Airways, KC International Airlines JSC Royal Flight Airlines and Zhejiang Loong Airlines. The addition of these new carriers and new routes are bringing more choices and conveniences to local resident and travelers. In 2018, China Taiwan market continues to grow steadily by 1% while Southeast Asia market and Mainland China market increased by 9% and 34% respectively. There was a growth of 11% in passengers taking low-cost airlines and a tremendous growth of 18% in passengers taking traditional airlines.

MIA witnessed steady growth in both passenger traffic and aircraft movement in 2018, laying a solid foundation for expanding the airport's air network in 2019.  MIA will continue to serve as the air bridge connecting Macau to the world in 2019. In the aspect of market development, we will fully develop long-haul route, aiming to change the current passenger market structure, thus attracting more international and local travelers flying to and from MIA. With the development of the market demand, the airport will continue to develop e-commerce and Virtual Terminal.  In addition, the airport has kept upgrading the conditions of its hardware and software. In order to maintain the sustainable development of the airport and to cope with the continuous increase in passenger volume, at the end of 2018 MIA has commenced the design and build works of the south side of the existing passenger terminal to increase the capacity of the terminal building. MIA will continue close cooperation with all business partners providing high-quality, safe and efficient services for passengers, letting them to enjoy a pleasant journey at MIA.
