CAM Representatives Visited Shenzhen Baoan International Airport for Bird Strike Management

2023 / 10 / 19

Bird strikes have a significant impact on flight safety, and can potentially lead to flight accidents and major economic losses. While Macau International Airport attaches great importance to bird strike management. Although annual bird strike reports have been established to monitor airport over the year and surrounding environment changes, as well as strengthen bird activity management measures, bird strike incidents still occur from time to time. In addition, with the gradual resumption of airport flights and changes in the surrounding environment, bird migration and activity patterns have become increasingly complex, posing difficulties and new challenges to airport bird control and bird strike management.

Given the geographical proximity and similar ecological environment between Shenzhen Baoan International Airport and Macau International Airport, a delegation from the Airport Operations Department (AOD) of Macau International Airport Company Limited (CAM) visited Shenzhen Baoan International Airport on September 28th for observation and exchange experiences and received by Mr. Liu Feng, General Manager of Shenzhen Baoan Airport Company Limited and Mr. Chen Jinquan, General Manager of the Flight Area Management Department. The purpose of the visit was to gain insights into bird strike management, included personnel arrangement, indicator setting, reporting procedures, coordination and follow-up actions, as well as bird control and bird detection equipment facilities. Furthermore, the delegation first visited the Bird Research Laboratory at Shenzhen Baoan International Airport, where to learn about the advanced experimental equipment to study the interactions between birds, plants, and insects, and collect information on migratory bird activity patterns in the central and southern regions. This information allows for the early issuance of bird strike warnings. Subsequently, the delegation conducted on-site inspection to observe the management of grass areas within the flight zone and gained insights into the operational effectiveness of various bird control and detection equipment facilities, such as photoelectric bird detection radars, double-layer bird barrier nets, intelligent sound bird deterrents, long-range acoustic bird repellents, solar-powered gas bubbles, vehicle-mounted multiple-shot cannons, and wind-driven bird deterrent devices. By this visit, both parties can engage more extensive collaborations, share information with management experience, and jointly improve the level of bird strike management.

Representatives of CAM includes: Mr. Hoover Hu, Senior Head of Air Traffic Services Division, Operations Branch of AOD, Mr. Justin Ip, Manager of Safety Office of AOD, and Mr. Chan Hou Lon, Senior Airport Supervisor of Operations Branch of AOD and Ms. Cheong Leng, Standards and Wildlife Coordinator.
