Passenger Traffic at Macau International Airport Grew Stably During Q1 and Easter Break

2025 / 04 / 24

In the first quarter of 2025, Macau International Airport handled 1.83 million passengers and 14,000 aircraft movements, making a 2.2% and 1.6% year-on-year increase, with cargo volume fell 9.5% during the same period, performing not as good as expected. The geopolitical situation and global economic instability have posed challenges for route development. In terms of market segmentation, passengers from air routes of the Mainland of China accounting for 46% of the total number of passengers, and the passengers from air routes of China Taiwan accounting for 18% of the total number, while the passengers from air routes of Southeast Asia and Northeast Asia accounting for 36% of the overall passenger flow volume. In the first two months, the number of international passenger volume reached 200,000, representing a 13% year-on-year growth. The Easter break traffic reached to 92,000 passengers, a 3.5% increase compared to the same period last year, while the number of flights was 638, with a decrease of 3.4% compared to that of 2024. Furthermore, rising operational costs for airlines have further constrained its capacity, leading to noticeable changes in market structure and having a significant impact on the passenger and cargo operations. It is expected that the passenger and cargo volume in 2025 will not align with the forecast target at the beginning of the year.

With the start of the new summer flight season, Macau International Airport is not only ensuring smooth internal operations, but also actively encouraging airlines to launch new routes by providing incentive programs and route development plan for the airlines, striving to utilize the air right of Macau effectively to further enhance the feasibility for airlines to introduce new routes. Currently, AirAsia will commence flights between Tawau of Malaysia and Macau in early May. Jeju Air is expected to launch the new route to Jeju of South Korea in May and is also planning to introduce the Cheongju of South Korea route in collaboration with relevant airlines to further enhance the connectivity between Northeast Asia and Macau. In addition, related airlines plan to resume flight services on the Taiyuan route in the Mainland of China in July.

In terms of enhancing passenger experience, Macau International Airport will launch service centers at Shenzhen Shekou, Zhongshan Port and Gongbei Port in Zhuhai in the second half of the year. This initiative aims to fully integrate sea-air-land transportation resources to continuously optimize route layouts and improve various facilities and services. Macau International Airport constantly aligns with the policies of the SAR Government, striving to provide more convenient travel services, attract more international visitors, and support the development of the local civil aviation industry and tourism sector of Macau.
