Macau International Airport Records Stable Traffic Growth in the first quarter of 2017 and Continues diversification of routes
In the first quarter of 2017, MIA has 1% year-on-year increase on the passenger volume and has recorded 13,000 flight movements indicating year-on-year decrease of 5%.
At present, the capacity of the Passenger Terminal of Macau International Airport is already saturated. To meet the future increase in traffic and provide quality passenger service levels, the airport has been expanding and the development of routes will gradually increase. In the first quarter, MIA has added two new airlines and two new destinations. They are Cambodia Angkor Airlines and JC Cambodia International Airlines, which mainly provide direct flights with the new hot spots from Sihanohkville and Siem Reap to Macau. Currently MIA has offered 19 direct flights to Southeast and Northeast Asia which accounting for about half of the route distribution. At the same time, Southeast Asia and Northeast Asia routes accounted for 43% of airport passengers, providing more than 360 round-trip flights per week to visitors. On March 29 Tigerair Taiwan had inaugurated daily direct flights from Macau to Taichung, providing passengers with more convenient and travel options.
Looking ahead in the second quarter, MIA had contacted with a number of new airlines and the Macau to Bali route will be launched in the mid of April, MIA actively explore the route to Indonesia and is expected to open Macau to Jakarta direct flights in October. At the same time, a number of low-cost airlines in Japan are also actively engaged with the Macau International Airport, as they are interested to expand their market to Macau.
During the Easter holiday, MIA recorded 1.5% increase of passenger growth compared with the same period of last year. Macau International Airport will continue to grasp the current advantages, and fit with the Macau SAR Government tourism development direction to actively explore more international destinations, and provide safe, diversified and high-quality travel options for the Macau resident and passengers.
