MIA Representatives Attended 2018 China Small and Medium-sized Airports Development Forum

2018 China Small and Medium-sized Airports Development Forum was held by China Civil Airports Association (CCAA) from 3rd July to 5th July 2018 in Yichang, China. The theme of forum was "Openness, Integration, Transformation, Win-Win".  Aviation specialists, management and scholar from Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC), CCAA, Yichang Municipal People's Government, small and medium sized airports, airlines and the related sectors were invited to the forum for discussion and exchange of the road of small and medium sized airport development.


Macau International Airport Company Limited (CAM), as a Director Member of CCAA, was invited as one of the guest speakers of the forum. Ms. Grace Cheang – Director of Finance and Administration Department delivered a speech in the theme of “Operation and Management Mode of Macau International Airport (MIA)” as representative from CAM, to share the concession system and the mode of operation management as well as the governance mechanisms of MIA, which concluded the 20 years operation of MIA and its core of business theory and development strategies.


The forum was started by welcomed speeches of honorable guests and presentations were sectional into 4 main topics as Industry Guidance and Policies Support, Interconnection and Transformation, Smart Airport and Future Approach, Collisions of Views. Centered on the status and trend of small and medium sized airport development, the speakers expressed opinions and conducted in-depth discussion on the aspect of operation mode of airport and development strategies with the audiences.


During the meeting, the speakers expounded that the rapid growth of China civil aviation industry and upward trend of passenger traffic has been sustained in recent decades. It is concluded that the growth of small and medium sized airport is correlated with its scale. It is emphasised that not only assess an airport solely by profitability, but also balance its revenue generating capability with benefits brought on the economics, military, politics and livelihood. Regarding the approach of the reform and development of airport, the participated experts expatiated the weaknesses should the small and medium sized airport be overcame. Aside from that, most of the infrastructure projects of airports in the Mainland relied on the government subsidies; meanwhile, expansion of routes is the key of maintaining the airport development, which also demonstrated the value of the airport. The attempt of management mode transformation and sub-concession of certain airport services, which is worth deeply pondering, for lowering the operation cost.


This forum provided a platform for aviation industries to enhance their insights of mutual development of small and medium sized airports and regional economy. Through this event, attendees discussed opportunities and challenges facing by civil aviation industry, expecting to tighten internal communication and cooperation among the industries to support the growth of small and medium airports.
