Macau International Airport Invited Expert Group to Conduct Ecological Investigation
In order to further improve runway safety, to enhance the management level of lawn maintenance and the bird strike prevention at Macau International Airport (MIA), Macau International Airport Company Limited (CAM) and Brilliant Landscaping & Gardening Company Limited invited an expert group to conduct ecological investigation at MIA. Under the coordination of the Operational Standards and Wildlife Coordinator of the Airport Operations Department, the expert group investigated the interrelationship between the airport lawns, insects and birds of the surrounding areas at MIA on 28th April 2023.
The expert group included: Entomologist from Sun Yat-sen University - Professor Jia Fenglong; Botanist from Sun Yat-sen University - Professor Fan Qiang; Ornithologist and turf grass expert - Dr. Leong Va; and turf grass expert, Senior Engineer of Turfgrass Research Institute of Beijing Forestry University – Mr. Yang Yaonan. The group conducted investigation on the airport lawn varieties; lawn insect species and density; bird species and density and the dynamic changes of bird seasons, etc. Through the investigation and research to understand whether there are any invasive and harmful lawn species and plants, as well as medicines and remediation methods for controlling insects to screen out the lawn varieties suitable for MIA as to set up a lawn management plan. At the same time, the expert group integrated various factors and conditions to propose bird control measures to the airport to improve flight safety.
The purpose of this investigation was to improve the lawn maintenance and management level of MIA by improving ecological management to reduce bird activity at the airport area, reduce the occurrence of bird strikes to further enhance aviation safety.
