CAM EC Chairman Chan Led Delegation to Join 23rd EAAA Annual Meeting

2025 / 11 / 04

A delegation led by the Chairman of the Executive Committee of CAM Mr. Chan Weng Hong attended the 23rd Annual Meeting of the East Asia Airports Alliance (EAAA) on 2nd – 3rd Nov 2025. The Annual Meeting was rotated to be hosted by Airport Authority Hong Kong this year and all the 12 member airports executives are there to attend the meeting.

The theme of the meeting was “The Future of Airport Revenue: Leveraging Non-Aeronautical Opportunities” and each airport executive introduced their respective airport’s strategy and suggestions accordingly. In his keynote speech, Chairman Chan introduced how Macau International Airport (MIA), in line with the SAR Government's “1+4” moderately diversified development strategy, is accelerating the quality development of integrated tourism and leisure, continuously enriching the connotation of "World Centre of Tourism and Leisure," and promoting cross-sector integration through "tourism+". MIA actively participates in the promotion of the Macao Government Tourism Office and cooperates with local tourism industry, actively expanding its international tourist market through a "tourism + MICE" strategy. As a key city in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, passenger market structure of MIA primarily consists of Southeast Asia and short-haul regional routes, radiating its passenger base across the Greater Bay Area.

In 2024, non-aeronautical revenue accounted for 54% of total revenue of MIA and serves as a “stabilizer” in the airport’s financial strategy, but continuous studies and innovative ideas are required to unlock potential source of revenue. The structure of global airport non-aeronautical revenue has shifted as shown on research of Airports Council International, while the tourism industry of Macao has experienced changes in passenger structure and consumption habits after the pandemic. Coupled with global economic instability and external factors which are having negative impact on the airport passenger volume and non-aeronautical revenue. Macau International Airport has implemented various measures to enhance non-aeronautical revenue potentials, including repurposing some former duty-free commercial space to expand security and departure areas, optimize security area space, and introduce technological upgrades to improve security processing efficiency; replacing signage and wayfinding facilities to provide clearer guidance and enhance the passenger experience; optimizing commercial spaces by adding stalls and pop-up shops, and introducing local Macao brand snacks, desserts, and beverage stalls to integrate culture into the commercial space. Emerging marketing strategies such as IP collaborations, immersive entertainment experiences, and the introduction of digital technology to enhance services, customs clearance, and personalization will be key drivers of future growth.

Other attendee at CAM included Director of Corporate Communications & Policy Research Office Ms. Vicki Mou.
