2005 Macau International Airport Annual Result and 2006 Objectives and Strategies

Macau International Airport Company Limited concluded a review of the work and achievements of the airport over the past year and outlined the objectives and strategies for the year 2006, ahead.

MIA Passenger Business Development
Ms. Liu Suning, Senior Assistant to the Chairman and Director of Marketing Department stated that, in 2005, Macau International Airport has handled a total of 4,250,754 passengers, representing a 14.44% growth comparing with 2004, in which 1,333,821 passengers and 2,459,577 passengers coming from Mainland China and Taiwan representing, respectively, 31% and 58% of the total. A total of 45,004 aircraft movements have been registered, representing a growth rate of 11% in comparison to 2004.

The 4th East Asia Airport Alliance Regular Meeting
Ms. Liu said that the Macau International Airport Company Limited valued very much the establishment of close relationship with the nearby airports in order to strengthen external promotion and communication.  In 2005, the 4th East Asia Airport Alliance Regular Meeting was hosted by the Macau International Airport Company Limited in Macau during February 2005, and was completed with success. In this Meeting, over 50 delegates from the 8 member airports and their respective leaders were in attendance. It has been agreed that the next East Asia Airport Alliance Regular Meeting will be held in Beijing, hosted by China’s Capital Airports Holding Company and to approve the application of Kansai International Airport Corporation’s application as a new member, bringing the number of member airports to a total of 9.

Following to The 4th East Asia Airport Alliance Regular Meeting, the EAAA Customer Satisfaction Campaign was launched on 1st of July, concurrently with the other 8 member airports in China, Korea and Japan.  Macau International Airport being part of the alliance was coordinating the campaign.  The two-week campaign aimed at promoting customer service awareness amongst the member airports for their services and the facilities.  The nine member airports: Airport Authority of Hong Kong, Beijing Capital International Airport Company Limited, Incheon International Airport Corp., Japan Airport Terminal Co. Ltd, Korea Airports Corporation, Narita International Airport Corporation, Kansai International Airport Co. Ltd., Shanghai Airport Authority and Macau International Airport Company Limited.

Low Cost Carrier Symposium - Macau 2005
Low Cost Carrier Symposium - Macau 2005 was held at the Macau Tower, organized by The Institute of Macao Civil Aviation and Macau International Airport Company Limited. The opening ceremony was presided by Eng. Ao Man Long, Secretary of Public Works and Transport of Macau SAR Government together with Mr. Ng Fok - Standing Committee Member of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference Mr. Huang Songpu - Deputy Commissioner, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of People's Republic of China in the Macao Special Administrative Region, Mr. Zhou Zhikui - Director of Economic Affairs Department of Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macao Special Administrative Region, and Mr. Chui Sai Cheong - President of The Institute of Macao Civil Aviation (IMCA).

The symposium’s main objective was to share amongst delegates the management and service experience of Macau International Airport after the beginning of operation of two of the leading Asian LCCs, Air Asia and Tiger Airways, to further analyze the different impact in line with the fast development of LCCs and to probe into the potential for LCCs in China and the keys for the development and sustainability of the LCCs.

Participating and Supporting International Airport and Aviation Related Conference
Macau International Airport Company Limited also values the establishment of close relationship with the nearby airports.  This proven through participating and supporting international airport and aviation related conference and exhibition activities, for example:

Participated in the annual New Route Asia 2005
Participated in the third annual New Route Asia 2005, which took place in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in March 2005. New Route Asia is a regional event focused entirely on the development of air services within the Asia Pacific region and this year.

The 11th World Route Development Forum
For promoting Macau International Airport, Macau International Airport Co. Ltd attended "The 11th World Route Development Forum". "ROUTES" organized by Copenhagen Airport in Copenhagen, Denmark in September 2005 provided a chance for the participants to exchange their experiences and explore business opportunities. In the exhibition, CAM exploited the booming tourism and entertainment of Macau as the background to show the new profile and the potential of Macau, where Macau was praised as "Eastern Las Vegas". Over 1,500 delegates including more than 500 airports from 150 countries, 275 airlines and suppliers attended the forum.

PATA Travel Mart 2005
In September, CAM attended "PATA Travel Mart 2005", which was organized by Pacific Asia Travel Association, PATA in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. "PATA Travel Mart 2005" is one of the powerful travel and tourism exhibitions in the Pacific Asia region. Around 300 enterprise delegates from 45 countries attended it with an aims to promote Macau Airport and exploring business opportunities during this exhibition.

ACI 2005 World Annual General Assembly and Exhibition and ACI Pacific Regional conference
Macau International Airport Co. Ltd. attended the ACI 2005 World Annual General Assembly and Exhibition and ACI Pacific Regional Conference which took place in the SkyCity Conference and Exhibition Centre in Auckland, New Zealand in November 2005.

Guangdong 2005 International Tourism and Culture Festival
Participated in the Guangdong 2005 International Tourism and Culture Festival in December, more than 600 organizations including airlines, provincial tourism offices and travel agents attended this event as well.
Ms. Liu also pointed out that with the participation in a number of major international conferences and exhibitions have significantly raised the profile of Macau International Airport at a global level, while boosting the development of Macau’s aviation industry.

Macau International Airport’s 10th Anniversary
In 2005, it was the year the Macau International Airport celebrated its 10th anniversary; a series of commemoration activities were carried out aimed at highlighting the airport’s development throughout the years. Hoping that by taking this opportunity, we were able to share the joyfulness with the local community in celebrating this landmark date together. These events also served to engage the public in a broader aviation knowledge aiming at increasing the recognition and sense of belonging of the Macau International Airport.
 
The series of MIA 10th anniversary activities included: "Macau International Airport 10th Anniversary Commemorative Logo Design Competition"; "Macau International Airport 10th Anniversary Draw your Flying Dream - Children Painting Competition"; “Macau International Airport 10th Anniversary - Nationality Songs and Dances Performance Wishes from the Grassland performed by “Inner Mongolia Grassland Airport Art Troupe”, "Macau International Airport 10th Anniversary Photo Competition"; "Macau International Airport Knowledge Quiz", "Macau International Airport 10th Anniversary Leo Ku in Concert" and "Macau International Airport 10th Anniversary Commemorative Envelope".

Ms. Liu said that with a number of new hotels and large-scale tourism and entertainment facilities which are schedule to start their operation in the near future, the aviation industry of Macau will grow rapidly and is cultivated in an environment, which will be full of opportunities and challenges.
 
Indicating also that, passenger traffic development of Macau International Airport and the Macau tourism industry are closely related to each other. It is necessary to improve and perfect the airport’s facilities, exploring more scheduled flights, new routes, more air links as well as attracting more airlines to use Macau International Airport in order to keep track with the fast growing local tourism and gambling industry.

For the purpose of achieving the 2006 passenger traffic goal, Macau International Airport is carrying out a series of positive efforts to strengthen its route network, such as exploring new overseas markets, including Japan, Middle Eastern and European countries. Continuing to work closely with Mainland China and the neighbouring airports, to encourage close cooperation with airlines, hoping to attract more new international airlines who intend to further their businesses by using Macau International Airport; to establish new and long-haul routings, etc.

Ms Liu points out that the people of Macau is proud to have an airport of their own – it is not just an airport providing a gateway for the Macau residents, it also acts as an airport that benefit the “International City” status that Macau has earned.  In order to develop our route network at a faster pace, Macau International Airport will continue to support the traditional airlines to expand their markets as well as encourage more low cost airlines to fly to Macau.

 
In conclusion, in order to achieve our goals in 2006, Macau International Airport Co. Ltd. will carry out the following activities and tactics:

  1. Attracting more Mainland China airlines to fly to Macau in form of charter or schedule flights.
  2. Signing “Sister Airports Agreement” with more Mainland China and Overseas Airports aiming to enhance further closer relationships, in a result to prepare ourselves to establish new direct routes between Macau International Airport and these airports.
  3. Continue to enrich the existing “Express Link” Service
    • The establishing of check-in counters in Hong Kong and Shenzhen regions.
    • Preparation of the launching of “Land to Air Express Link” service, which allows travelers to optimize their time developing business opportunities, rather than spending it on travel connections.
  4. Continue to work closely with airlines, aviation entities and Macau Government Tourist Office to develop comprehensive services for the target market segments for the purpose of promoting Macau, promoting Macau International Airport.
